My husband was in the mood for fudge, and the purist that he is, he wanted plain old chocolate fudge. I consulted the trusty cookbook and of course there were an array of recipes. I settled on the one titled “Favorite Fudge” thinking this would be a piece of cake.
My Review
I’ve made fudge before, with and without Fluff, so I wasn’t too intimidated by the recipe. In hindsight, I should have been, though, because holy fudge fail! I followed this recipe EXACTLY as it was written and I ended up with a hard, gritty (but tasty)…candy. (I can’t even call it fudge because it wasn’t soft and smooth or fudge-like at all.) I’m not unfamiliar with a candy thermometer and I’ve never had an issue with fudge before. I don’t understand.
I can’t tell you why, but one of my favorite kitchen activities is stirring. This recipe called for quite the opposite. You put the ingredients in the kettle, and let them do their thing until they reach a certain temperature. Then you mix like mad. Well, first of all, it took a long time to get to temp. Once it did, the mixture was too hard and stuck to the pot to stir like mad. Clearly I did something wrong, and I’m not sure what. Maybe my pot wasn’t heavy enough? Maybe it was too big. I just don’t know. Despite the overall failure, I have to say the taste wasn’t horrible. Then again, how can you go wrong with sugar, chocolate, and butter?
I’d like to one day master the art of fudge-making, but I think I’ll move on to a different recipe.

Hmmm… I have a friend who makes maybe the best fudge in the world. I’ll ask for her recipe. Then I’ll try not to make it…😟
